Lulu Dube interview

Mwelela Cele interviews Lulu Dube as part of the Memories of Inanda documentary, produced for the eThekwini Municipality’s Ulwazi Programme. Lulu discusses her father John Langalibalele Dube, the founding of the African National Congress and life in Inanda.

John Dube (1871 – 1946) was a South African essayist, philosopher, educator, politician, publisher, editor, novelist and poet. He was the founding president of the African National Congress

Ulwazi Programme officially launched

Ulwazi Programme officially launched

The Ulwazi Programme (along with the libraries’ CyberZone initiative) was officially launched on Wednesday, 5th May 2010 at the KwaMashu Library in Durban.  Programme leader Betsie Greyling provided a presentation on both programmes along with information on the new e-library services.

Guy Redman (Deputy Head Libraries & Heritage  at the eThekwini Municipality), Jacquie Subban (Head of the Geographic Information and Policy at the eThekwini Municipality) and Logie Naidoo (Deputy Mayor of the eThekwini Municipality) all spoke about the eThekwini Municipality’s SmartCity programme and how Ulwazi now forms a key component of this.  Representatives from local, provincial and national government were in attendance, along with with journalists, library staff and pupils from KwaMashu schools.

INDIGENOUS INSTRUMENTS AND MODERN TECHNOLOGIES FESTIVAL

A three-day festival of music featuring indigenous instruments and modern technologies comes to Durban this May. The festival celebrates “Latitude 350 South”, a space for musical heritage, creation and research, for both artists and scholars along this latitude. Following a successful New Zealand meeting, the Durban festival includes concerts, workshops and conference presentations, spread over three days.

Sunday 16th May 2010 – 15h00 at Botanic Gardens Amphitheatre
Alejandro Iglesias Rossi conducts the Orchestra of Indigenous Instruments and Modern Technologies from The National University at Tres De Febrero in Argentina in their African debut. The internationally acclaimed Orchestra of Indigenous Instruments and Modern Technologies has been described as an orchestra that ‘rejects the concept of boundaries, no matter which…’ (Radio France Info) and ‘weds ancient spirituality and modern sensibility’ (The Jakarta Post). The orchestra consists of composer-players whose performances on indigenous instruments mixed with electronic and contemporary lutheries ‘invocate sound with … conscious and profound attention and concentration’ (Latvian National Radio).

Tickets cost: R80 (adults); R50 (pensioners); R20 (children and students)

Gcina Mhlophe interview

Nellie Hlongwane interviews story-teller Gcina Mhlophe for the Ulwazi Programme.

Born in Hammersdale Township, Durban in 1959, Gcina Mhlophe-Becker is a well-known South African freedom fighter, activist, actor, storyteller, poet, playwright, director and author. She does her most important work through charismatic performances, working to preserve storytelling as a means of keeping history alive and encouraging South African children to read.
